KHALIFA CHELTOUT (B.1939)
Tunisian painter-printmaker — a tender gaze between tradition and modernity
Born in 1939 in Mahârès, in the governorate of Sfax, Khalifa Cheltout stands out as a sensitive figure of contemporary Tunisian art. An autodidact at heart, he trained himself to see and feel, shaping his pictorial universe with delicacy and precision.
A recognized painter-photographer and printmaker, Cheltout lived for a long time near Tunis, where he set up his studio — an intimate and inspired place of creation shared with his artist wife, a few kilometers from the capital.
His work was brought to light during numerous sales and exhibitions: the work Femmes chez le sage (1994), executed in acrylic on canvas — a delicate and evocative representation of femininity, a signature of his art.
Although he may not necessarily have benefited from major international recognition, his local commitment and his presence in the Tunisian art world ensure him a respected place among the artists gravitating around the School of Tunis.
