Vibrations | DANHOO
02 February 2019 - 23 March 2019 | Club House Gammarth
Of Chinese origin, Danhôo settled in Paris in 1983. He worked as an assistant to Eros, Combas, and JonOne, and later crossed paths with numerous contemporary and urban culture artists, including Ernest Pignon Ernest, before fully dedicating himself to his true passion: painting.
Danhôo draws inspiration from Asian calligraphy, using ideograms as the foundation of his works on white canvases. The canvases are then placed directly on the floor and treated with layers of poured paint, creating textures, reliefs, and unique surface effects. These layers produce fractures, cracks, and dimensionality that define the artist’s style. In the manner of American abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock, Danhôo frequently employs dripping and all-over techniques.
He is among the artists who channel their emotions through their medium. His works exist in a space between magic and violence, where the energy and sensation of each brushstroke are transmitted through every layer. With creative vigor and complete technical mastery, each piece is carefully composed to provide depth, light variations, and contrast on the canvas. This emotional intensity extends to every detail, from the ideograms themselves to the choice of colors, each carrying traditional Chinese meanings, such as blue for luck and red for happiness.
Understanding his creative process—or witnessing him in action—changes the viewer’s perception of his works. Unlike many contemporary urban artists, Danhôo has dedicated recent years to studio practice, allowing him to present a broader selection of works in this exhibition.
