selim ben cheikh
Selim Ben Cheikh (born in 1979) is a multidisciplinary Tunisian artist. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Tunis with a Master’s degree in Visual Arts in 2003, before pursuing further studies at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, where he earned a postgraduate degree (DEA) in Aesthetics and Art Sciences in 2004.
Since 2011, his research—often rooted in the sociopolitical context of the Arab world—has informed a multifaceted practice developed through several solo exhibitions in Tunis: Obliques (Galerie A-Gorgi, 2014), Ijtihad (Galerie Ghaya, 2017), Incertitudes (La Boîte, 2017), and most recently Dust in the Wind (Galerie Musk and Amber, October 2024).
He has taken part in numerous artist residencies both in Tunisia and abroad, including Belgium, France, Switzerland, and Sweden. Since 2020, he has been experimenting with new media such as spray paint and pigments, focusing his research on the concepts of trace, line, and touch, while questioning the absence of the artist’s body within the artwork.
Outside Tunisia, his most recent solo exhibition, Horizontal, Vertical, Horizontal, was presented in June 2023 at All ArtNow Gallery in Stockholm. He exhibits regularly between Tunisia and various European countries. His latest participations in group shows include Unhealed (Moderna Museet, Malmö, March–September 2024) and Fully Booked (Hotel Nour Justinia, Sousse, July 2024). In October 2024, he is represented by All ArtNow Gallery at Swab Art Fair in Barcelona.
