WISSEM EL ABED

Wissem El Abed (born 1977) is a Tunisian visual artist. Trained at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts of Tunis, he earned a PhD in Art and Art Sciences at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. Since 2012, he has been teaching at the Higher Institute of Fine Arts of Sousse.

His work combines drawing, installation, assemblage, and illustration. He develops a singular graphic universe populated with distorted figures, repurposed materials, and fragmented narratives. His approach questions notions of otherness, displacement, erasure, and memory, using a visual language that is simultaneously critical, poetic, and accessible.

His projects have been presented notably at the Archaeological Museum of Sousse (Alea jacta est.tn, 2021), Elbirou Art Gallery (Dhahaba, 2022), and Central Tunis (Moi, après le déluge, 2023). Winner of the Anhar: Culture and Climate program (2024), he participates in a cross-residency between Tunis and Montreal with Galerie B-312.
